What is SAF – and why does it matter?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is an alternative aviation fuel made from biogenic waste such as used cooking oil – entirely without palm oil. SAF can partly replace fossil kerosene and reduces CO₂ emissions by at least 80 percent compared with fossil fuel.

Eurowings uses SAF as part of the Lufthansa Group SAF Partner Programme. The SAF purchased is fed into Lufthansa Group flight operations within six months of purchase.

How the SAF Bulk Deal Programme works

Companies receive an individual report on the calculated flight-related CO₂ emissions of their Eurowings business travel over a defined period. Based on this data, the SAF contribution is determined – enabling flexible reduction of up to 80 percent of these CO₂ emissions.

For SAF Bulk Deals starting from €2,000, an Emission Mitigation Certificate (EMC) is also issued. This certificate can be used in non-financial reporting (e.g. under CSRD) as evidence of the company’s contribution to CO₂ reduction.

    ]]>    Eurowings is now officially certified according to the European EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) standard and the international ISO 14001 standard. The initial audit took place in May 2025 and was successfully concluded in August 2025 with the issuance of the EMAS certificate by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The certification covers all German locations for administration, flight operations and maintenance of Eurowings Aviation GmbH, Eurowings GmbH, Eurowings Digital GmbH and Eurowings Technik GmbH.

    EMAS and ISO 14001 are internationally recognized standards for environmental management systems. ISO 14001 specifies requirements for how companies can continuously improve their environmental performance, minimize risks and comply with legal requirements. EMAS builds on this, but goes further: in addition to the ISO requirements, EMAS demands additional transparency, regular external audits and the publication of an environmental statement.

    As part of the certification process, Eurowings is publishing its first environmental statement for the years 2022 to 2024. It documents the environmental impact of all German locations and shows how the airline is systematically working towards its ecological goals.

    There are plans to extend certification to Eurowings' pan-European locations in the coming year.

    The environmental statement is now available on the Eurowings website and will be updated annually with the latest figures to provide a transparent overview of the continuing development of the environmental management system.
